Best Ways to Utilize Vitamins, Supplements, Hormones.

If you’re anything like I am, you’ve got a drawer full of vitamins, supplements and hormones to take daily (that’s if you remember). I’ve done my fair share of research throughout the years and now that I’m older, I’m still convinced supplementing my diet makes a difference to my health.

Here’s a breakdown of what vitamins, supplements and hormones I take on daily basis:
Daily
  • Vitamin D
    Fish Oil
    Multi Vitamin
    Multi Mineral
    B12
    Magnesium
    True Calm
As Needed
  • Melatonin
    Bio Identical Estriol/Estradiol
    Bio Identical Progesterone

The recommended dosage on this chart from the National Institute of Health is based on general established guidelines for supplemental vitamin intake.

This chart from the USDA is a little more interactive and gives you the opportunity to plug in your age and weight (which is pretty darn important) to find what your recommended daily doses might be.

The wild card is your own personal physiology which includes your current health status.

Supplements do just what they say. Supplement what you’re not getting in your diet, or add nutritional support when your body is going through a health challenge. For example if you’re not getting enough Vitamin D from sunshine, you may want to take more than the recommended daily dose.

The Mayo Clinic has recommendations for Vitamin D for a variety of health needs and their recommended dose varies from 40 IU to 10,000 IU daily.

If you live near a Vitamin Cottage/Natural Grocers (US only) or a reputable health food store, go and talk to one of the folks in the vitamin aisles. They’re extremely knowledgeable. With literally thousands of products to choose from, don’t expect to be the expert.

Regarding hormone supplementation, I firmly believe a natural compounded formula is the only way to receive either estrogen, progesterone or testosterone safely. You may find you run into a brick wall when trying to find a physician or naturopath who will prescribe compounded formulas but it’s worth while to keep searching. Or find a compounding pharmacy and ask for referrals.

Christiane Northrup talks more about the dangers of synthetic hormones.
